Welcome to our my very first blog! I am so excited that you are here. Whether you have visited the Virgin Islands before, or are a first timer I hope to guide you through that one big question we all have, where should we do this photoshoot?!
In this blog, I’ll talk about some intricacies of selecting the ideal venue for your dream photoshoot in the breathtaking U.S. Virgin Islands and give you some reccomendations of my favorite places to book a photoshoot. As a seasoned wedding photographer based on the enchanting islands of St. Thomas and St. John, I understand the significance of choosing the right setting to ensure stunning and unforgettable photographs.
The biggest issue with choosing a venue is choosing ONE, not choosing one. Seriously, it might be hard to chose just one because we have no shortage of beauty on every inch of these islands. Each area is so unique in it's own way. Here are a few things to think about...
Natural Elements
One of the first considerations when planning a photoshoot in the U.S. Virgin Islands is the natural environment. The pristine beaches are undoubtedly tempting, but keep in mind factors such as sand (which can get hot and reflect light), ocean breeze, and the intensity of tropical sunlight.
Weather and Climate
The Virgin Islands enjoy a tropical savannah climate with makes these islands delightful year-round, but it's important to plan around the heat and humidity, especially during midday. The golden hours just after sunrise and before sunset offer the most flattering light for photoshoots.
It’s worth noting that the U.S. Virgin Islands, like other Caribbean destinations, experience the hurricane season from June to November. While we would like to hope that these islands stay out of direct path of these storms, we always have to keep ourselves up to date with weather forecasts and warnings to ensure effective planning and safety.
Backdrop Variety
The islands boast diverse backdrops, from lush tropical forests and historic ruins to panoramic ocean vistas. The choice of backdrop can significantly enhance the mood and aesthetic of your photographs.
Cost Considerations
While the U.S. Virgin Islands offer unparalleled beauty, keep in mind that certain locations, such as private villas or beaches within the National Park, may come with higher costs for photography permits or venue rentals.
Beach Venues
The beaches of St. Thomas and St. John are iconic settings for romantic photoshoots. Consider the following when planning:
Sand Conditions: Some beaches have coarser sand or shells that may affect comfort during the shoot.
Wind: Coastal breezes are refreshing but can impact hair and clothing.
Lighting: Midday sun can be harsh, and so can shadows. Consider early morning or late afternoon shoots if your schedule allows for it. For those stopping here for the day on a cruise, consider booking in our "winter" months for a cooler temperature in comparison to say, August.
Public Beaches: All beaches in the U.S. Virgin Islands are public beaches, meaning you have the freedom to explore and enjoy these locations. However, keep in mind that these islands experience high tourism, especially between November and May. During peak tourist seasons, popular beaches like Magens Bay and Sapphire may be more crowded. To ensure the best experience for your photoshoot, consider scheduling early morning or late afternoon sessions to avoid the busiest time of day.
National Park
St. John, home to Virgin Islands National Park, offers spectacular natural settings ideal for a wedding photoshoot. The Virgin Islands National Park covers 60% of St. John, ensuring that much of the islands natural wonders remain unspoiled. Here, you'll encounter picturesque ruins, forested trails, and secluded beaches. Be mindful of the park's photography policies and associated fees for commercial shoots.
Villa Backdrops
Alternatively, the islands boast numerous villas and vacation rentals with stunning backdrops ranging from cliffside views to manicured gardens. These private venues offer exclusivity and unique photo opportunities. If you have a large group for a family vacation or wedding it can be cost effective to rent a villa. Not to mention, you will have everyone you love all under one roof. This can make it much easier to coordinate versus working out transportation for guests of a wedding or family members.
There is no shortage of incredible villa options to choose from. These stunning properties are all privately owned. Keep in mind these villas all come with their own pricing, set of rules, restrictions, and fees for events such as weddings. Please coordinate that directly with the villa owner or your wedding coordinator.
Hotels
The Virgin Islands have numerous hotels with beautifully kept properties, ranging from big names like The Westin and The Ritz Carlton, to smaller bed and breakfast vibes like the Pink Palm hotel. Pricing and availability range throughout the year. Most of the hotels are specifically places in picturesque areas to enhance the experience of your stay, which makes it a perfect candidate for your photoshoot venue.
Pricing and Logistics
When planning a photoshoot in the U.S. Virgin Islands, it's crucial to factor in costs beyond photography, such as transportation, permits, high season price increases, and accommodations. National Park fees for wedding ceremonies or commercial photography vary and should be incorporated into your budget.
Now that we’ve covered your range of venue options and things to consider, lets talk about the star of the show... the reason we leave our snow covered streets and winter jackets behind... lets talk beaches!
While St. Thomas has over 40 beaches and another 20 on St. John, there are no doubt some favorites of the bunch. Here are a few of my personal favorites:
1. Magen's Bay Beach, St. Thomas
Magen's Bay is a true gem of St. Thomas, known for its pristine white sands and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Stretching over 3/4 of a mile, this beach offers ample space and stunning vistas, making it ideal for romantic photoshoots.
Key Features:
Facilities: Magen's Bay boasts excellent amenities, including bathrooms with outdoor showers, a beachside bar, concessions, and a gift shop.
Scenic Backdrops: The gentle curve of the bay and the lush green hillsides provide a picturesque backdrop for capturing unforgettable moments.
2. Sapphire Beach, St. Thomas
Another captivating location is Sapphire Beach, offering a blend of natural beauty and convenience. This beach features soft sands and calm waters, perfect for both relaxation and photography. Take in the breathtaking view of our neighboring islands including St. John and the British Virgin Islands.
Key Features:
Facilities: Sapphire Beach is well-equipped with restaurants, bars, a coffee shop, bathrooms, and a gift shop, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
Dining: For those planning a wedding reception or special event, consider making reservations at Sea Salt, a renowned restaurant located at Sapphire Beach. Indulge in delicious cuisine while soaking in panoramic ocean views.
3. Lindquist Beach, St. Thomas
For a more secluded and tranquil photoshoot experience, consider Lindquist Beach on St. Thomas. This pristine stretch of coastline is less crowded, offering a serene backdrop for intimate moments.
Key Features:
Peaceful Atmosphere: Lindquist Beach is known for its peaceful ambiance and unspoiled natural beauty.
Facilities: Although less developed, Lindquist Beach provides basic facilities such as bathrooms, ensuring comfort during your visit.
4. Morningstar Beach
Located between The Westin and Buoy Haus in the Frenchman's Bay area on St. Thomas, Morningstar Beach is a hidden gem that has recently reopened after extensive renovations following the devastation of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. This beach is conveniently accessible by road and offers a range of amenities.
Key Features:
Restaurants: Indulge in coastal Spanish cuisine at the SandBar restaurant, situated right on the beach, or experience fine dining at Isla Blue.
Proximity to Cruise Ship Dock: Morningstar Beach is the closest beach to the Havensight Cruise Ship Dock, making it an ideal destination for cruise visitors seeking a picturesque photoshoot during their island stopover.
5. Hawksnest Beach
For those seeking a quieter and more secluded beach experience, Hawksnest Beach on St. John is a hidden oasis close to Cruz Bay and the ferry terminal. This beach offers a tranquil setting surrounded by natural beauty and wildlife.
Key Features:
Shaded Pavilions: Hawksnest Beach is equipped with shaded pavilions and picnic tables, providing comfort and convenience.
Wildlife Encounters: Keep an eye out for wild donkeys that roam the area, adding to the charm of this pristine beach.
6. Trunk Bay, St. John
Trunk Bay, located on the island of St. John, is renowned for its stunning underwater snorkeling trail and pristine white sands. As part of the Virgin Islands National Park, this beach offers excellent facilities and breathtaking views.
Key Features:
National Park Setting: Trunk Bay is under the management of the Virgin Islands National Park and is well maintained.
Facilities: Enjoy amenities such as bathrooms, showers, concessions, and a beachside bar, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience for your photoshoot.
